Indian Wells — 5 Hotels (Best for Tennis-First Visitors)
Who this area is for: If you’re here purely for tennis and plan to stay at the venue from morning to night, Indian Wells is the right call. You can walk back to your hotel between matches, return for evening sessions without worrying about parking, and fully immerse yourself in the tournament atmosphere.
Grand Hyatt Indian Wells Resort & Villas (formerly Hyatt Regency)
The most family-friendly option in Indian Wells. The on-site HyTides Water Park features a lazy river, dual water slides, and a splash pad — plus a separate adults-only pool. Rooms, suites, and villas available.
Best for: Families who want to combine tennis with a resort day
Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa
A large, self-contained resort with a signature sand-entry pool, spa, 24-hour gym, café, and sushi bar. Every room has a balcony. If you don’t want to leave the property, you don’t have to.
Best for: Those who want a high “everything in one place” factor
Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa
Low-rise villas scattered across 11 acres of gardens, with indoor and outdoor relaxation at Spa Rosa. A quieter, more intimate feel compared to the larger resorts.
Best for: Those who want a relaxed, garden resort atmosphere
Sands Hotel & Spa
A stylish boutique hotel designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard. The on-site restaurant Pink Cabana is one of the most talked-about spots in the area.
Best for: Design-conscious travelers looking for a boutique experience
Indian Wells Resort Hotel
Founded in 1957, this is the classic Indian Wells hotel — originally associated with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Close to the venue and the best value option in the area.
Best for: Value-focused visitors who want walking distance to the courts
Palm Springs — 5 Hotels (Downtown Boutiques & Nightlife)

Who this area is for: Watch tennis until early evening, then head into Palm Springs for dinner, drinks, and the downtown scene. It’s a 30–40 minute drive to the venue, so night sessions aren’t ideal — but if you want a destination beyond tennis, Palm Springs is hard to beat. I lived here for a time, and I genuinely love this city.
Villa Royal ⭐ Personal Recommendation
Rooms are arranged around a central pool — you can sit outside your door and watch the pool with a morning coffee. Cookies in the evening. A relaxed, personal atmosphere that’s hard to find at larger hotels. Highly recommended.
Best for: Those who want a quiet, intimate pool-centered stay
The Palm Springs Hotel ⭐ Personal Recommendation
Also pool-centric, with rooms wrapping around the water. The evening jacuzzi was one of my highlights. Breakfast may not be included (check when booking), but the overall experience is excellent.
Best for: Jacuzzi lovers, relaxed pool stays
The Monkey Tree Hotel by AvantStay
A charming, enclosed boutique property with a distinct personality. Good breakfast. Worth considering if you want something a little different.
Best for: Those looking for a quirky, character-filled stay
Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs
The only hotel in downtown Palm Springs with a rooftop pool. A 7-story modern hotel with exceptional sunset views over the desert.
Best for: Sunset views, downtown location, modern design
La Quinta — 2 Hotels (Best Value + Easy Access)
Who this area is for: Relatively close to the venue with lower prices than Indian Wells. A solid choice if proximity and value are your top priorities.
La Quinta Resort & Club, Curio Collection by Hilton
An iconic resort at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains. 41 pools, 21 tennis and pickleball courts, PGA WEST golf courses, and 7 restaurants. If you want a full resort experience at a lower price point than Indian Wells, this is it.
Best for: Golf + tennis combinations, resort experience at better value
Embassy Suites La Quinta Hotel & Spa
All-suite hotel with made-to-order breakfast included. Close to Old Town La Quinta, and listed as a shuttle hotel for official BNP Paribas Open travel packages — worth checking if the shuttle is still running this year.
Best for: Families, those who value breakfast included, shuttle access
Palm Desert — 2 Hotels (Shopping, Dining & Large Resorts)
Who this area is for: If you want easy access to restaurants and shopping alongside tennis, Palm Desert offers the most balanced combination.
JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa
A genuinely impressive large-scale resort with gondola boats navigating indoor lagoons, multiple pools, multiple restaurants, two golf courses, tennis, pickleball, and a full spa. An all-weather destination in its own right.
Best for: Families, those who want maximum on-site activities
HOTEL PASEO, Autograph Collection
A boutique hotel steps from El Paseo — the “Rodeo Drive of the desert.” The on-site restaurant Larkspur Grill is well-regarded, and the pool and spa round out a refined, walkable stay.
Best for: Shoppers, those who want a boutique feel with walkable dining
Rancho Mirage — 2 Hotels (Luxury & Family Waterparks)
Who this area is for: A upscale residential area relatively close to the venue. Limited hotel options, but both are excellent.
The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage
Perched on a hillside with sweeping desert views, The Edge Steakhouse, and a club lounge. Modern design that embodies “desert luxury.”
Best for: Luxury travelers, special occasions, views
Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa
Home to Splashtopia — a 425-ft lazy river, two 100-ft water slides, a sandy beach zone, and a separate adults-only pool. Consistently one of the most family-popular properties in the region.
Best for: Families with young children — the waterpark alone justifies the stay
How to Book: A Few Final Thoughts
The two weeks of the BNP Paribas Open are the busiest period of the year across the entire Coachella Valley. Prices spike and availability disappears fast — book as early as possible.
A few considerations based on my experience:
For families: Prioritize waterpark properties — Grand Hyatt Indian Wells or Omni Rancho Las Palmas. Being able to spend a full day on-site without driving anywhere makes a real difference.
For tennis purists: Indian Wells is worth the premium. Walking back to your hotel between matches is a luxury you’ll appreciate more than you expect.
For those who want more than tennis: Palm Springs is my personal recommendation. The downtown scene, the restaurants, the mid-century architecture — it adds a whole other dimension to the trip. Just accept that night sessions won’t be part of your schedule.
Coming up in Part 3: How to navigate the grounds, outer court tips, and what to bring on the day.
