Berlin Mitte is an area known not only for its tourist attractions, but also for its exceptional food scene. Having lived in Berlin about ten years ago, I’ve hand-picked the places I kept coming back to in this neighborhood.
Every spot on this list is somewhere locals actually go — no chain restaurants, no tourist traps. Just genuinely good food.
The One Place You Absolutely Cannot Miss: Al Contadino

The first place I want to tell you about is Al Contadino. This was the restaurant in Mitte that truly blew me away.
The stars of the show are fresh mozzarella and wine. The rich, milky depth of freshly made mozzarella paired with carefully selected wines is an incredible combination. On a warm day, eating out on the terrace makes it even better.
If you’re visiting Mitte, please make this your first stop.
Al Contadino Mozzarella Bar & Bottega Address: Auguststraße 34, 10119 Berlin, Germany Area: Mitte (near U Weinmeisterstr. station) Check Google or the official website for current opening hours before visiting.
Cafés & Bars
Oslo Kaffebar
Address: Eichendorffstraße 13
A pioneering third-wave coffee shop in the Norwegian style. Known for its warm wooden interior and exceptional espresso. Tucked slightly away from the bustle of Mitte, it feels like a Scandinavian hideaway — perfect for when you need a quiet moment to yourself.
Mein Haus am See
Location: Around Rosenthaler Platz
A quintessentially Berlin spot that’s a café by day and something close to a bar-club by night — open 24 hours. Settling into the tiered seating with a drink in hand is a one-of-a-kind experience that perfectly captures the spirit of Berlin after dark.
Altes Europa
Address: Gipsstraße 11
True to its name (“Old Europe”), this beer hall-café feels like stepping back in time. In the fast-changing world of Mitte, this place alone feels like time has stood still. In summer, the outdoor terrace is the kind of spot you won’t want to leave.
German Food

Lebensmittel in Mitte
Address: Rochstraße 2, 10178 Berlin
This was always my go-to for German food. I’d recommend the Schweinshaxe (braised pork knuckle) or the Schnitzel — both pair perfectly with beer. If you’re after proper German food in Mitte, you really can’t go wrong here.
Restauration 1840
Address: Am Zwirngraben 8-10, 10178 Berlin
Another solid spot for German cuisine. The place is large, so you can usually get a table even when it’s busy — great for a casual stop between sightseeing. When in doubt, come here.
Hofbräu Berlin
Address: Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 30, 10178 Berlin
The Berlin outpost of the famous Munich beer hall. The oversized steins (mega-Maßkrug) are non-negotiable. Food is served too, making it the perfect destination for a hearty night of eating and drinking.
Snacks & Late-Night Bites
Curry 61
Address: Oranienburger Str. 6
It looks like a tourist spot, but the seriously good sauce keeps locals coming back too. Currywurst is a Berlin institution, and this is the place I always ended up after a night out.
Esra Falafel
Address: Oranienburger Str. 87
A kebab shop right across from Curry 61. When I was really hungry after drinking, this was my go-to. Absolutely delicious. Often open late into the night — an essential part of the Berlin nightlife experience.
When You’re Done With German Food: Japanese & Asian Cuisine
For long-term visitors and residents, “German food fatigue” is a real thing. These Japanese and Asian spots scattered around Mitte were genuine lifesavers for me.
Mamecha Cafe
Address: Mulackstraße 33, 10119 Berlin, Germany Area: Mitte (near U Weinmeisterstr. station)
A café that feels like a piece of Japanese café culture transplanted directly into Berlin. The tea and cakes are excellent, and lunch is great too. Back then, there were even tatami seats — the interior was stylish and calming throughout.
I can’t overstate how much this place saved me during my homesick moments. If you find yourself craving something sweet in the afternoon, this is the place to go.
Smartdeli Sushi & More
Address: Novalisstraße 2, 10115 Berlin, Germany Area: Mitte
A unique hybrid of restaurant and Japanese grocery store. The menu includes Japanese set meals like karaage teishoku — exactly what you’re after when you’re craving home cooking. The vibe is more café than restaurant, making it perfect for a solo dinner.
They also stock Japanese snacks and instant ramen, which was an absolute lifeline. Whenever I had a craving for something specific from home, this was the first place I’d check.
For Ramen Lovers: Cocolo Ramen
Mitte: Gipsstr. 3 Kreuzberg: Graefestr. 11
The place that sparked Berlin’s ramen boom. It started out as a tiny, ramshackle little spot, but has since grown into a proper restaurant — and the queues haven’t gone anywhere. The aroma of tonkotsu broth filling the air gives the place a nostalgic, almost timeless quality.
Rumor has it that a certain famous footballer used to drive over just to eat here.
On a side note — I once ran into two Japanese players from Hertha Berlin at a different Japanese restaurant. Both incredibly nice guys.
My Favorite Restaurant in Berlin: Shaniu’s House of Noodles
Address: Pariser Str. 58, 10719 Berlin, Germany Area: Wilmersdorf (a bit outside Mitte, but absolutely worth the trip)
I’ll be honest: this was the restaurant I visited most during my time in Berlin. I was going roughly once a week.
It serves genuinely authentic Chinese food, and I still think it’s the best Chinese restaurant in Berlin. The must-orders are the dumplings and the pork chop noodles — both packed with real, natural flavor, completely different from the Westernized Chinese food you find everywhere. The stir-fried eggplant and other side dishes are also delicious, and honestly, it’s hard to order badly here.
Whether I was tired of German food or just in the mood for something satisfying, this place never let me down. It’s popular among the Japanese and Asian communities living in Berlin too. It’s a bit of a trek from Mitte, but more than worth the journey.
