Article 2: The Soul Food Patrol (Day 2)

Japan (日本)

1. Lunch: The Creamy Miso Legend at “Shingen”

For lunch, we headed to Shingen, famous for its ‘Koku’ Miso Ramen. I’m not exaggerating when I say this is the best Miso ramen I have ever had in my life.

The broth is so incredibly creamy and mellow, unlike the aggressive salty types you might find elsewhere. Be prepared for a line—I waited for about 40-60 minutes, but trust me, it was worth every second.

I know Tonkotsu is often the reigning champion for ramen lovers abroad, but Japan offers a huge variety of styles like Shoyu (soy sauce), Shio (salt), and Miso. Personally, Miso is my absolute favorite, especially with butter and corn toppings—a classic Hokkaido style. Sapporo is the birthplace of Miso ramen, so you have to try it here. And whatever you do, don’t forget to order the Fried Rice (Chahan) and Gyoza. When you combine them with the creamy ramen… Holy Moly. It is the ultimate comfort food experience.

2. Soft Serve

After the rich Miso Ramen, we needed something sweet to cleanse our palates. We stopped by SUN MILK JAPAN, a specialty milk shop located in the new landmark “COCONO SUSUKINO.”

They are obsessed with milk. Their soft-serve ice cream uses “Goku-Nama (Premium Fresh)” cream, which apparently took three years to perfect. It was incredibly milky yet refreshing—the perfect bridge between a ramen lunch and a curry dinner.

3. Dinner: Spice Therapy at “Ramai”

For dinner, we went to Asian Bar Ramai, the king of Sapporo Soup Curry. Sapporo is the birthplace of Soup Curry, and Ramai is a heavyweight in the scene. The bowl was overflowing with chunky fried vegetables—lotus root, asparagus, pumpkin. The spicy, medicinal broth pairs perfectly with a refreshing yogurt Lassi. It felt like a detox and a feast at the same time.

The ordering system is unique here—you can customize everything from the soup flavor to the rice size. I recommend the “Pork” curry with “M” size rice. If you are feeling adventurous (and hungry), ask for the “Kin-tore” size rice… it’s a massive 1kg mound!
